Richmond County Tourism Devlopment Authority Richmond County, founded in 1779, had its beginnings with cotton and indigo plantations.

The rich clay soil along the Pee Dee River supported and built some of North Carolina's most successful ante-bellum plantations.

Stroll through the Rankin Museum of American Heritage and discover one of the finest general artifacts collections in North Carolina.

The historic districts in Rockingham, Hamlet, and Ellerbe will give you a glimpse of days when our country was growing yet life's pace was slow.

The Hamlet Train Station and the Ellerbe Springs Inn are but two of many sites on the National Historic Register.

Richmond County is also part of the Uwharrie Lakes Region. It includes visitor highlights like the Morrow Mountain State Park, Town Creek Indian Mound, and the North Carolina Zoo. All located within a short drive of anywhere in Richmond County.

Richmond County is located in the center of the two Carolinas. It's the perfect spot to stop. We're just a couple of hours from the beaches, mountains, and many metropolitan cities. From statuary, which is molded and manufactured on premise to outlets shops, Richmond County can keep even the most dedicated shopper busy.

Produce markets dot the country side and folks come from all around to buy the lush, juicy, ripe fruits and vegetables grown here. There's no better smell in the world than the fruits fresh from the fields. Cantaloupes, peaches, tomatoes, beans, apples, and strawberries are just of few items you'll find in these wonderful markets.

For the outdoors and wildlife enthusiast, Richmond County offers unending opportunities. Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge has over 3,000 acres of migratory bird feeding grounds. The Sandhills Wildlife Management Area abounds in deer, dove, quail and other game. National Hunting Dog Trials are held fall through spring. Boating, skiing, and fishing are popular on Blewitt Falls, Pee Dee River, Hitchcock, Mountain and Drowning Creeks. If Golf is your game, you'll have plenty from which to choose. Richmond Pines Country Club was designed by the famed father of golf course architecture, Donald Ross. In addition to Loch Haven Golf Course, a public facility, there are more than 40 courses in the Pinehurst area located just a short drive away. Our mild climate allows for year round outdoor fun.

Our race track makes Richmond County truly a tourist destination with over 250,000 people annually attending events here. Richmond County is the home of the "THE ROCK". IHRA races are the main attractions.

Richmond County has several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Richmond County Court House and the U.S. Federal Building, currently utilized as county offices. Rockingham's Fayetteville Road Historic District is listed on the National Register and consists of many fine, older homes which have been restored to their original condition. Cartledge Creek Church, 6 miles northwest of Rockingham, was established in 1784. The third Baptist State Convention met here on November 4, 1833 and passed a resolution setting up the Board for Wake Forest College.
